Genre - Contemporary / Young Adult Fiction
Pages - 310
My rating - 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

I have never faced discrimination on the basis of my religion or the choice of my clothes so I can't relate to the protagonist. If this is what you think when you pick up this book, then you would be proven wrong just as I was. Tahereh Mafi has written this thought provoking book centered around a teen girl who is a muslim by faith and wears a Hijab and her life changes post 9/11.

People are mean, sometimes cruel but you only realise the intensity of their ignorance or hatredness when you are at the receiving end of it. To make you understand how subtly Mafi makes intense emotions appear effortlessly in this book: "I was so raw from repeated exposure to cruelty that now even the most minor abrasions left a mark".

My opinion is that you don't need to use complicated storylines or an aggressive array of words to make a point and that's just what this author has done. Individuals stereotype other Individuals; that's a harsh truth but do we ever stop and realise the consequences of our actions .

"If maybe just maybe, I'd been so determined not to be stereotyped that I'd begun to stereotype everyone around me"

This book is certainly made for teens but it's not just for them, it reflects and highlights the shortcomings of our society and how we are failing as human beings to provide a safe healthy world for people of all ethnicities and different faiths to live peacefully.

I'm not perfect and even I couldn't comprehend why girls wore hijab even when they were given a choice, and this book certainly made me understand that more than the faith it's about the freedom to choose what you wear and how much of yourself you make visible to people. It's basically your choice and that's something which every girl wants- "The Freedom to Choose".

I'd recommend all readers and non- readers to read this book and try to understand the prejudice which certain people face all their lives and still thrive at the face of it .
