Genre - Historical Fiction
Pages - 586 pages
My Rating - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is my first book by this author and I'm Impressed . Historical Fiction is my favorite genre and I might be biased when it comes to the books of this category. This book is centered around 15th century France and I'm not lying when I say that I had no clue about this era and events which occurred in France. So I picked up this book knowing nothing about it actually.

The author as I later found out is the co-founder of Women's Prize for Fiction, and she certainly delivered a book which is heavily laden with Family lineage; with a good amount of mystery which made it an interesting read to me. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.

I have to talk about the cover though too because it has black embossed letters against a striking blue which is the actual reason I bought it.🙈  ( No!! it wasn't just a cover buy). This book has a fair amount of maps and actual pictures of certain historical landmarks.

The book describes how a deep separation between people, on the basis of their faith led to rift in the society; which was further aggravated by the aristocratic royal family / government. This was basically the period known as "French Wars Of Religion" between Roman Catholics and Huguenots.

"Faith enforced in the agony of Flames"

The ordeal faced by innocent civilians is depicted quite candidly, the radical Huguenots determined to fight for their freedom and equality are the crux of the story. A parallel and more poignant narrative runs along this story which revolves around the female protagonist, by the name of Minou and she carries all the mystery which the book has.

I found the story to be captivating, fast paced and informative. Certain facts which you should consider before diving into this book are: It does contain a lot of 15th century archaic language so keep your phone handy to translate, the story takes times to build, so a little persistence till the first 50 pages will be nifty. And most important, pick up this book if you truly love knowing about the world history.
