The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller | BOOK REVIEW

Book: The song of Achilles

Pages: 352

Genre: Historical Fiction

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

TSOA is a heart-rending story filled with warmth and love, honour and glory and worst of all arrogance and conceit. We’ve all heard or read about the famous Trojan War – the battle of troy. But this book explores not only the legendary war but also a heroic warrior – Achilles.

The main protagonist of the story is Patroclus, the shamed son of menoetius who was exiled to the small kingdom of Phthia. There he meets the glorious Achilles, the prince of Phthia. They both become friends swiftly, and it’s their friendship and the relationship that grows which is explored beautifully in this book.

Madeline Miller is a brilliant writer who writes stellar historical fiction and the song of Achilles is another masterpiece of hers. The thought provoking vivid writing instantly transports you to the world of Greeks. The plot, story line and the character sketch, everything was perfect for me. The way every character shines in the book is evident of the 10 years of research and effort put by the author.

When you read a book about famous warriors and gods you expect them to be heroic and just. But the author captures their wit and greed in perfect detail. It’s Patroclus an ordinary human as compared to the others who emerges as a true fighter with his wisdom and kindness.

The person who shows the right direction, even to the mighty Achilles in the times of hardship.

If you’re a fan of Greek mythologies then you’ll definitely love this book. It’s a brilliant ode to The Iliad written by Homer. Although I haven’t read the latter book yet, but after reading this story I am curious to read the original version of the Trojan War.
